Why you should learn a second language – DanSensei English Podcast
Listening is a great way to improve your listening skills and your English in general because it will help you naturally pick up new language and grammar in context. It is a very important skill to develop and listening to podcasts is a great way to do that.
That’s one of the main reasons I started this podcast. I want to give English learners a chance to listen to a podcast that is designed for them and that is interesting and fun. No one wants to listen to a podcast about grammar, right?
In this episode, I talk about why I think everyone should learn a second language.
Motivation is key
If you want to learn a new language, you actually need to ask yourself “why”?
If you don’t know why you are learning a new language, it is going to be very hard to keep going in the dark times, and trust me, there will be dark times.
There are loads of reasons that people choose to study a new language. It could be to have a better career, or it could be that you want to communicate with people from a different country. Perhaps you just want to watch TV shows and movies from another country without the subtitles.
Everyone will have a different reason and that is fine. As long as you know what that reason is, you will be able to stay motivated and change your life with a second language.
My Language Learning Journey
I am not the best language learner in the world. When I was in school, I hated learning languages.
I didn’t really understand why it would be useful for me to know another language. I wasn’t motivated at all and I found everything really boring. I guess most school kids feel this way. The only reason I learned French and Spanish is because they made me. Shockingly, I can’t remember a single thing about those languages.
However, when I got older and decided to move to Japan, I decided to try and learn Japanese. It has been the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life.
I had taken some lessons before moving to Japan but when I arrived here, I basically knew nothing. I couldn’t communicate. I couldn’t understand. I couldn’t survive.
That’s when I decided I had to take language learning seriously. I got some textbooks and I started to teach myself Japanese.
After 6 years, I am able to function in most daily life conversations and my life is much better because I can understand what is happening around me and communicate with people. However, I made a lot of mistakes along the way…
Why i learned japanese
When I decided to come and live in Japan, I also thought I should probably try and learn Japanese.
It turns out Japanese is one of the hardest languages in the world to learn as a native English speaker.
However, I knew that if I wanted to survive and experience everything my new life had to offer, learning a second language is essential.
There were a lot of road bumps along the way, such as not being able to find where I live and having a rather uncomfortable inspection at the hospital, but all of these things motivated me to keep going.
Now I can speak to a level that I can survive and function in daily life. It has also helped me have experiences I never thought I would have.

Learning a new language changed my life
That is not a joke. It really changed my life
Learning Japanese opened a world of experiences and encounters that I never even imagined were possible.
When I moved to Japan, I didn’t expect to meet and fall in love with a Brazillian woman. However, learning a second language allowed this to happen and my life is much better because of it.
It also allowed me to be on Japanese TV, on the cover of a photography book that you could buy in book shops, I was a model in a hairdressing magazine and I ended up on stage in front of 1000 people at a Japanese punk festival. All of these things happened because I could speak a second language.
If I hadn’t tried to learn a new language, most of these things would never have been possible. Don’t close off the world, learn a new language and find a new one!
