I was born and raised in Sheffield, UK. I like playing guitar, travelling and watching too much YouTube. I am a professionally qualified CELTA teacher from the University of Sheffield and I have a bachelor’s degree from the University of Hull. I have over 8 years teaching experience with people of all ages and levels from all over the world.
From the UK to Japan
These days I live in Japan where I teach English. I moved to Japan in 2016 on my own and I didn’t know much Japanese at the time. It was really difficult! It did give me some valuable experiences that many teachers haven’t had. Those experiences helped me to understand the problems many of my students have.
I Know Your Pain
I know what it is like to learn a foreign language and how difficult it can be to make progress. I understand how confusing it can be when you don’t know what you should study to get better. I also felt how frustrating it is when you miss out on amazing experiences because of the language barrier. This was the main reason I started this website.
I also know how much knowing another language can improve your life and your experiences when you are visiting or living in a different country. Everything becomes easier when you can speak the language and you can have amazing adventures and make awesome friends.
How Did I Get Started?
I moved to Japan in 2016… On my own… without knowing the language. I can tell you, those first few months were one of the hardest experiences of my entire life. Everything was difficult. Even being able to buy a sandwich was a task that took a lot of planning. It was not fun.
After a while, I started to learn the language and things became easier. Sandwiches were bought and things were starting to become more enjoyable. I got to the point where I could even start to make friends and take part in events. This opened up a whole new world for me. This is how I learned the value of speaking a second language. Fast-forward a few years.
One day in the spring of 2020, I was working from home and teaching my classes online. The world had changed in a huge way and things would never go back to the way they were. Not being able to be in the same room as my students was really difficult at first.
Then I realised I could help them improve their English while being in a completely different place. This is when I really understood the power of the internet for helping people.
While everyone was stuck at home, more and more people were using the internet and trying to learn new skills. I was doing the same thing, but I also noticed that there were many people online “teaching” and not doing a very good job. There was too much information and it was too easy to get confused.
I decided to try and make it simple. I wanted to teach people the way that I wanted to learn. The big difference is that I want to make it fun, interesting and I want to teach you real English that native speakers actually use. I don’t want any more boring teachers and hour long grammar videos!
